What is it about cat grass that attracts cats?

My mother-in-law loved cats and would always give them a special treat – catnip. Catnip is a leafy plant with stems and heart-shaped leaves. Although edible to humans and cats, catnip is not that nutritional. Wheatgrass, also edible to humans, cats, and dogs, is a perennial grass that looks bright green and has a rich source of vitamins and nutrients. In fact, you can drink wheatgrass juice to help with your digestive system. The first time I ever drank it I thought it tasted awful and that I would gag. I don’t think I finished my glass of juice that day. I was staying with some health-conscious friends who made their own wheatgrass juice.

Sure enough, the juice looked very bright green. I’m sure that it was full of rich vitamins and nutrients, but that was the last time I drank wheatgrass juice until last weekend. My husband and I ate breakfast at the home of our friends who happened to have some bright green juice. I asked if it was wheatgrass. My friend said that it was but assured me that it tasted very good and asked if I would like to try it. I tried it and actually did not gag. It tasted much better than the last time I drank it. This one was mixed with fruit juices which made it quite tasty.
Both catnip and wheatgrass grow to approximately 3 feet to 3 1/2 feet tall. Apparently, the oils in the catnip leaves make cats go bonkers. Wheatgrass can be used as a pasture grass for animals and contains amino acids, vitamins and minerals that are necessary for a dog’s nutrition. However, it is not used as a lawn grass.
If you want to enjoy watching your cats play, buy catnip. Catnip is minty and looks pretty in a garden as well.

Try planting some wheatgrass. Either grow it like my health-conscious friends did to benefit from the vitamins and nutrients, or grow it for the cats and dogs in your family. If you can’t stand the fresh wheatgrass taste, go for the tasty type blended with other fruits.

I’d heard that wheatgrass was good for cats, too. In fact, I’d thought about buying some for my cats, but never thought about growing it. Thanks for the idea!

WOW! That’s impressive. Some of my friends in Arizona made me a Wheatgrass health drink. I drank it – at least some of it. It tasted awful. But since then I’ve tried a Wheatgrass brand in one of the stores, and it’s quite tasty.
